The "Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) method" is a technique that has historically been used in the field of catalysis to evaluate acid and base sites. First, the temperature of the catalyst is raised to a high temperature to remove the adsorbed gases, and then NH3 or CO2 is adsorbed. By subsequently raising the temperature of the catalyst again under programmed conditions, NH3 or CO2 is desorbed, and the amount of desorption is used to evaluate the acid and base sites.
